In this short post, I’m going to share the SippingCoconuts’ tip on what we consider the best transport option to get from Lisbon airport to Lisbon city centre from a price vs time/hassle perspective.

The usual choices you read about are bus (€4 per pax), metro (approx €1.45 per pax) and official taxi (approx €20-25 per taxi). Sometimes these make sense if you’re travelling alone or have only a backpack so taking trains is easy.

My recommended option

If you’re travelling as a group or family however, I’ve found that ride hailing apps such as Uber and Kapten (my Lisbon favourite-Use my code JUNHWA3 to receive €4 credits) is a perfect alternative as it is cheap for four people, easy to use and the apps shows you the details upfront like the fixed fare and waiting time clearly. (pssttt: Kapten is even cheaper than Uber because its an app used mostly by locals)

Where to wait for your taxi

At Lisbon Airport, the pickup area for ride hailing app taxis is at the departures level in Terminal 1. So head to the right once you exit the baggage collection area and take the escalators up one level. Head out towards what looks like an open air car park. It’s called the Kiss & Fly car park and you should see lots of other people waiting around looking at their phones.

You can access the free airport WiFi to use your app and the WiFi range extends all the way to the car park.

My real life example

So when we first arrived, we took the official taxi to Alfama. Nothing to complain about the ride. It was comfortable and driver was courteous. Our fare came up to €25 as it was just past midnight.

We have read that some drivers might not be as nice or take a longer roundabout route to charge more. Can’t speak to that as we didn’t experience it personally.

The next day, Mr.C had to go to the airport to pick up some delayed baggage and he used the Kapten app. His fare there at 10pm was €6.05 and the return journey was €5.75. Very reasonable isn’t it! It reduced our exasperation with Lufthansa somewhat ( 🙁 ) for delaying our baggage.

So remember folks, our recommendation is to download and use the Kapten app. Please consider supporting us by using the code JUNHWA3 for us both to receive €4 in credits.

Thanks for reading and enjoy Lisbon! Plus point, you can also use Kapten in Porto and Algarve.
