A couple of days ago, I combined my auditing skills and journalistic aspirations to do a quick interview with Mr.C on how our portfolio was looking (and keep him straight!). I found some unexpected, quirky, and, dare I say, downright hilarious investments that we hold. I had to share!
- Dominoes – The Ultimate Pizza Powerhouse:
Who knew that investing in a pizza chain could bring such joy and (delicious) returns? Dominoes, the mighty dominator of the pizza industry, has managed to capture our taste buds (it is my go-to fast food in the world of pizzas) and Mr.C’s investment instincts. While we’re not exactly qualified food critics, we have done extensive research in devouring their delightful, cheese-laden creations! Mr.C divulged that his rationale was that in the recession, people would frequent fast food joints more and Dominoes has proven to be a solid business. - Crocs – The Footwear Phenomenon:
Yes, you read that right. Those rubbery clogs that have sparked countless debates about fashion and comfort. But hey, sometimes it’s not just about the trends—it’s about spotting a potential diamond in the rough. Crocs, with their iconic perforated design and rainbow of colors, have made a remarkable comeback. Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying their cult-like following and growing popularity. So, while it’s not for us, seeing them every time we open our doors (our neighbours!) and almost everyone in the hospital (lots of trips over the past year!), has Mr.C thinking – let’s see where it takes us. - DuoLingo – Language Learning with a Twist:
Now, we’re big believers in the app that teach us new languages while simultaneously torturing us with passive-aggressive messages from an adorable green owl. Hello, DuoLingo! This language-learning platform has taken the world by storm, offering bite-sized lessons and gamified challenges to help us master new tongues. Our Spanish vocabulary that got us by during the 7 months of travel was thanks to Duolingo, and our children use it occasionally for their Mandarin lessons. Now there’s Duolingo Maths and Duolingo ABC, and we love it all. Who knows, maybe our portfolio will benefit from our newfound multilingual abilities.
Turns out, investing doesn’t always have to be serious and predictable. It can be a wild ride full of unexpected surprises and delightful moments. While we still hold traditional investments, these offbeat choices add a touch of whimsy to our portfolio and make for great conversation starters!
I suppose, in the world of investing, it’s not always about being the smartest person in the room. Sometimes, it’s about being the one who’s willing to take a leap of faith, or perhaps, a bite of a cheesy pizza slice.
