Blogging & mind reading

We sometimes get questions on why we run this blog. It’s a bit hard to say exactly what motivated us to start other than the idea of documenting our journey to FI and in the meantime hopefully encourage others to do the same.

The act of blogging in general however has many benefits. For one it helps me to clarify my thoughts on a subject. The act of having to pen something down forces me to explain my points in a coherent manner. In fact, I sometimes find that my view can actually change after re-reading what I’ve written. Common wisdom is that the best way to master something is to teach it to someone else.

Great investors have always recommended writing down your investment thesis. That way, it’s harder for the mind to creep later to justify past actions. As I said above, you are more critical when you read your own thoughts and having our thoughts documented helps us remember the reasons behind decisions made in the past and learn what went wrong if it turned out badly.

A very unexpected side effect of blogging is the realisation that there are many instances where I don’t fully verbalise my thoughts on a subject and Ms. K only finds out later when she reads a post of mine. In a way, what we have here on the SippingCoconuts blog is a joint diary that Ms. K and I share! (A very public too) This way, we get the full picture of each other’s motivations and aspirations, which has helped us understand each other better. It is literally mind-reading…

So who would have guessed?! Joint blogging is actually a relationship tool too. 🙂
