I’ve recently discovered the joys of salsa. I never was a big fan, the salsa we get off the shelves here are so tangy that I usually skip the salsa altogether.

However I’ve been intrigued by the popularity of salsa. Why is salsa such a globally accepted and celebrated side dish for chips? What am I missing here?

Then comes along Mr.Tako and his effusive love of homemade salsa. It completely appealed to me as I love cooking from scratch. What is too expensive for me to buy, I have found immense joy in re-creating at a fraction of the price. Quite often, Mr.C and I like our homemade version better in taste as I would have adjusted the parameters of the recipe to our taste-buds. Contributing to the enhanced taste is the knowledge of what went in to the dish itself and it would be heaps healthier!

So one fine day, when we went to Johor for a weekend trip and did our groceries at Jusco whilst totally nailing geographic arbitrage, I stumbled upon fresh jalapenos. Hmm, sounds like a pivotal ingredient in salsa and oh look, juice red tomatoes. All systems a-go!

Popped these gorgeous colours in the oven for close to an hour and endured our eyes burning from the roasting jalapenos.

I probably could have roasted these guys a lil longer however I was impatient, I wanted to have salsa immediately!

Whizz the roasted ingredients in your trusty blender with some salt and a wee bit of sugar to taste and Bob’s your uncle!

That’s our version of salsa! I did forget the garlic this time around but oh well, still delightfully tantalizing!

Just so you know, a jar of salsa costs $6.20 at the store whereas I made 4 jars and a bit for the cost of $6. The size of the jar is exactly as the above picture, I clearly found some joy in re-using the jars for my homemade salsa at a fraction of the cost 😉

Oh the joy of eating homemade salsa <3 Bliss! What’s your favourite DIY meal?
